The pentucket youth lacrosse program is an instructional program, aimed at introducing boys and girls, grades 1st - 8th, to the exciting
and fun game of lacrosse. As an instructional program, the emphasis will be on learning stick skills, game fundamentals, and most of all on having fun.
Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions:
When will the practices and games be held?
We are hoping that the practices will start in march, depending on field conditions (mud and/or snow!). There will be
two practices during the week and games will be held on Sunday afternoons. The specific days that each team will practice will depend on the availability of the coaches.
Where will the practices and games be held? Practices will be held either on the field hockey field in front of the pentucket high school, behind the middle school or at pipe stave hill in west newbury.
We are planning for an 8 game season, roughly of which 4 will be played at home.
What equipment is required? In addition to a stick, the boys are required to have a helmet, shoulder and arm pads, gloves, a mouthguard, and athletic supporter/protective cup. Cleats are optional but they may not be baseball shoes nor shoes with metal cleats. A player may substitute hockey equipment, i.e, gloves and pads. Players are required to have a lacrosse helmet, hockey helmets are not allowed.
Girls are only required to have a stick, mouthguard, and an eye guard. close-fitting gloves are optional. In addition, the goalkeeper is required to wear a throat protector and chest protector.
Each player is responsible for his/her own equipment with the exception of the
goalkeeper's equipment, which will be provided by the team.
Isn't lacrosse a violent game? On the contrary, statistics have shown that lacrosse practices normally have an injury rate below that of gymnastics, football, basketball, soccer, and field hockey!
The normal game injury rate for boy's is lower than football, wrestling, soccer, ice hockey, and gymnastics. For girl's the game injury rate is lower than
gymnastics, soccer, basketball and field hockey. This is primarily because of the strict adherence to rules associated with body/stick contact and for the boys, the equipment.
What is the '9s program'? The 'u9s' is an introductional program for boys in the 1st-2nd grade. It is highly instructional, with an intent of introducing new players to the equipment and game. Modified games are held sunday mornings with other towns' '9s' teams. This a strictly a no-checking allow program and coaches are on the field during each game to instruct and ensure safety.
